silver portuguese first stamps

Celebrating 155 years of the onset of Portuguese stamps, edited the first collection of stamps in Portuguese silver.

The stamps with the effigy of the Queen Mary II were the first Portuguese postage stamps issued in 1853, in print and mint stamp of Francisco de Borja Freire.

The first stamps were based on British stamps from 1847-1848, with bust of the queen in relief similar to that of the coins circulating in altura. Printed one by one, in sheets of 24 copies, no indentations and dispersed irregularly.

The first two stamps were issued on 1 July 1853 and had the face value of 5 and 10 réis. The following day is given the seal of 100 réis and on July 22 to press the seal comes out of 50 réis. Portugal became the 45 th country in the world to adopt the postage stamp. The premature death of the queen on 15 November 1853, with 34 years, contributed to these seals continue its presence in the market for much longer.

The set of the first Portuguese stamps collection in sterling silver 925%o is the value of ninety-seven euro and fifty cents and is available for purchase.
